Jotham's Parable
The Parable of Jotham (Judges 9:7-15) narrates the danger of political power and the vacancy of the good.
1. Historical-Scientific Aspect
An anti-monarchical fable. Olive, Figueira and Videira (useful and productive plants) refuse the power to continue serving/producing. The Hawthorn (useless and flammable) accepts to reign, offering 'shade' (impossible for a low bush) and threatening 'fire'.
2. Theological Aspect (Universal Basic)
When good men omit politics/leadership, the bad men (thorns) take over. Tyranny arises from the vacuum of servant leadership.
3. Counterpoints and Misinterpretations
Interpret that believers should not get involved in politics. The text criticizes the lust for power (Espinheiro), not leadership itself, but suggests that those who are truly useful prefer to serve rather than dominate.
