The Talents
Omission is as reprehensible as transgression.
1. Historical-Scientific Aspect
A Talent was not a coin, but a weight of silver/gold (approx. 34kg). It was worth 6,000 denarii (20 years' salary). Even 1 talent was a fortune. The 'bank' (bankers) refers to money changers who paid interest.
2. Theological Aspect (Universal Basic)
God invests in us and expects a return (fruits of the Kingdom). The bad servant didn't steal, he just didn't do anything. He was guided by the fear of a 'hard God' (distorted view of God). The theology of fear produces sterility.
3. Counterpoints and Misinterpretations
Prosperity Theology/Coaching: Uses 'talents' as natural abilities to get rich. In the biblical context, they are Kingdom resources (gospel, spiritual gifts, time) for the glory of the Master, not self-promotion. The 'profit' is expansion of the Kingdom, not a bank account.
