The Hidden Treasure
The discovery of the Kingdom generates a joy that makes sacrifice irrelevant.
1. Historical-Scientific Aspect
In ancient Palestine, ravaged by constant wars, soil was the safest 'bank'. Josephus reports many treasures found after the destruction of Jerusalem. The man in the parable was probably a day laborer or tenant; Legally, the treasure belonged to the landowner unless he purchased the property.
2. Theological Aspect (Universal Basic)
The central point is joy ('overflowing with joy', v. 44). Selling everything is not a painful 'price' to buy salvation (which is grace), but a logical exchange of value: whoever finds something infinite, happily gets rid of the finite.
3. Counterpoints and Misinterpretations
Asceticism out of Fear: Interpreting 'selling everything' as a mandatory vow of poverty for salvation, driven by guilt, misses the point. Renunciation is a consequence of the discovery of value, not a legalistic prerequisite.
