The Rich Man and Lazarus
Death equalizes and fixes eternal destiny.
1. Historical-Scientific Aspect
The rich man wore 'purple and fine linen' (clothes of kings). Lazarus (Hebrew Eleazar, 'God helps') is the only named character in parables. Dogs licking wounds indicated extreme impurity and total abandonment (contrary to the romantic view of 'friendly dogs').
2. Theological Aspect (Universal Basic)
Wealth has dulled the rich man's vision of the need at his door. Hell (Hades) is portrayed as a place of consciousness and torment, but also of irreversible separation ('great abyss'). Miracles (someone being resurrected) do not convince those who reject the Word (Moses and Prophets).
3. Counterpoints and Misinterpretations
Myth of Salvific Poverty: Lazarus was not saved because he was poor, nor the rich condemned because he was rich, but by the attitude of each one towards God and others (revealed in the name Lazarus, dependence on God).
