The Yeast
The Kingdom transforms society from the inside out.
1. Historical-Scientific Aspect
Domestic: Three measures (saton) of flour are equivalent to around 39 liters or 25kg of dough – a huge amount, enough to feed more than 100 people (wedding banquet?). The leaven was a piece of sourdough from the previous batch.
2. Theological Aspect (Universal Basic)
Symbol Inversion: 99% of the time in the Bible and Jewish culture, yeast symbolizes sin/corruption (e.g. 'leaven of the Pharisees'). Jesus shocks by using it as a symbol of the Kingdom. The message: the Kingdom is not a theocracy imposed from above, but a subversive, invisible influence that permeates and alters the nature of all humanity.
3. Counterpoints and Misinterpretations
Some dispensational theologians insist that the leaven here is evil corrupting the church. But the structure ('The Kingdom of Heaven is like...') and the parallel with Mustard (growth/expansion) strongly favor the positive interpretation of transformation.
