The Pharisee and the Publican
Self-justification is abominable; humility attracts justification.
1. Historical-Scientific Aspect
The Pharisee did everything 'right' (he fasted 2x a week versus 1x required on the Day of Atonement). The Publican (tax collector) was a traitorous political collaborator and thief. In the Temple, the Pharisee went forward; the Publican remained far away, beating his chest (a female sign of extreme mourning, rare in men).
2. Theological Aspect (Universal Basic)
The Pharisee prayed 'from himself to himself'. He was confident in his performance. The Publican appealed exclusively to hilasterion (propitiation/mercy). Salvation is by grace, not merit.
3. Counterpoints and Misinterpretations
Inverse Pride: 'Thank God I'm not arrogant like that Pharisee'. This recreates the Pharisee's error. The lesson is to look to God, not compare yourself to others.
