Parable of JesusMatthew 13:47-50

The Network

The visible church is mixed; the final separation is divine.

1. Historical-Scientific Aspect

The sagene (trawl net) was pulled between two boats or to the beach, sweeping the bottom and catching everything. The Sea of Galilee has 24 species of native fish; the catfish (Clarias lazera), without scales, was 'unclean' (Leviticus 11:9-12) and should be discarded.

2. Theological Aspect (Universal Basic)

Similar to Wheat and Tares. The mission of the Church is to fish (cast the net), not judge (separate the fish) now. The church will always be a 'mixed body' (Corpus Permixtum, according to Augustine) until consummation.

3. Counterpoints and Misinterpretations

Using the parable to justify sectarian exclusivism ('only our denomination is good fish'). The text says that the net catches 'every kind', and the angels will do the sorting, not the shepherds.
