The Lost Sheep
God takes the scandalous initiative of seeking the lost.
1. Historical-Scientific Aspect
Pastors were marginal figures, considered unclean by the religious system (dirty work, they did not keep the Sabbath strictly). Leaving 99 sheep 'in the wilderness' (not in the pen) was either a calculated risk or an act of desperate love.
2. Theological Aspect (Universal Basic)
The focus is the joy of God. Unlike the Pharisees who segregated sinners to maintain holiness, God 'contaminates' himself by going to the desert to seek the lost. Repentance is celebrated in heaven.
3. Counterpoints and Misinterpretations
Moralism: It is preached that the sheep should 'scream' or 'come back alone'. In the parable, the sheep is passive in the rescue (the shepherd puts it on his shoulders); grace is entirely divine initiative.
