The Barren Fig Tree
Mercy postpones judgment to allow repentance, but does not cancel it.
1. Historical-Scientific Aspect
Fig trees take 3 years to bear fruit. The owner waited a reasonable amount of time. The vinedresser (Jesus) intercedes to 'dig around and put in fertilizer' - extra effort for free. Cutting down fruit trees was prohibited by law unless they were useless.
2. Theological Aspect (Universal Basic)
Israel (the fig tree) did not produce fruits of repentance. Jesus intercedes for more time/grace, but warns that the ax is laid (judgment in 70 AD?). It applies to every believer: faith without works (fruit) is dead.
3. Counterpoints and Misinterpretations
Cheap Grace: Thinking that God will never judge. The parable shows intercession and ultimatum. There is a limit to sterility.
